WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT BIPOLAR DISORDER
Bipolar disorder is like being trapped on a rollercoaster. Individuals experience swings from extreme highs to extreme lows and episodes can last for weeks, even months at a time. As a result, the individual’s quality of life, as well as their relationships with others, suffer and there is a greatly increased risk of other mental health disorders, ranging from substance abuse (which requires addiction treatment) to suicide.
WHAT IS BIPOLAR DISORDER?
Bipolar Disorder is a very common, though potentially very serious mental disorder in which the individual alternates between periods of extreme depression and episodes of mania, or an abnormally elevated mood. The suicide rate after 20 years of bipolar disorder is 6%, with an increase to 20% for those who spend a lifetime with the disease. Meanwhile, 30-40% of individuals report cutting or some other type of self-harm.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BIPOLAR DISORDER
Periods of intense euphoria, followed by depression
Delusions of grandeur
Poor impulse control
Changes in appetite
Thoughts of suicide or preoccupation with death
The increased suicide risk, as well as comorbidity with other mental health conditions including communicable disease, nutritional deficiency, autoimmune disease, obesity, alcoholism and addiction, make bipolar daunting to face. If you or someone you know is suffering from bipolar disorder, please get help immediately.
